Being empty nesters for a few years now, I had forgotten how much having a puppy is like having a child again. The early times getting up to take her outside to potty, sure brings back memories. A dog's bladder is rather small, so there are definitely more trips to go "take care of business".
Our new dog, make that puppy, is a three month old female Scottie, named "Maggie". I have always had a soft spot for a dog, and this is my second "Scottie". The first one was a male named Rocky, so I thought a female would be a good choice this time. It was a tough decision, as the dog breeder had a male Wheaten, that sure was cute.Although there are many choices for a dog, there is something about the mannerisms of the Scottie breed. My last dog was a male,Yellow Lab that died of old age.
Back to the child like behavior, a dog, especially a puppy, does need a lot of attention. She doesn't hardly let me out of her sight, when I am home. But having a dog is a great joy and good companionship. Maggie is a people person and gets along well with other dogs. Although her energy can be a little much with older dogs.
We have now had our dog for a month, and the potty training is going pretty well. Maggie has been sleeping all night for quite a while now. The whimpering, when I first put her in her kennel is getting better all the time too. I guess a dog looks for simpathy just like a young child does. I wish we could have a fenced in yard, because I believe another dog would be good for her. But I wouldn't trade the challenges for anything.
